I’m a mom of two very different boys. For years, being outside with our youngest meant watching him like a hawk — scanning exits, staying two steps behind him, bracing for him to bolt. Our oldest needed something just as real, just quieter: time to warm up to anything new, at his own pace. We built our backyard around both of them, piece by piece — and now, instead of bracing, we get to watch them both settle in and actually enjoy it ourselves, sometimes even with a cup of coffee still warm in our hands.
Before we started building, we looked — hard. Highly-rated inclusive playgrounds that turn into a crowd by 10am. An indoor sensory gym with none of the dirt, plants, or animals our kids needed. Real working farms with real animals and zero thought given to sensory design. Parents literally renting a stranger’s backyard by the hour just to get a quiet, safe outdoor space. Everything had a piece of it. Nothing had all of it.

This is bigger than a backyard.
We know a backyard can only do so much. That’s exactly why we’re building the rest. The backyard tool above is where we’re starting.
Here’s the gap we kept running into:
- Public playgrounds — free, but open onto the parking lot, and only quiet after dark or during school hours.
- Indoor sensory gyms — soft mats and foam blocks, calm but flat — nothing alive, nothing that smells like outside.
- Local farms — real goats, real dirt, but neat, fenced rows — nothing wild, nothing to climb.
- Wonder Grove — real woods, wild and climbable, real animals to meet, and calm enough that parents get to actually relax too — together, in one place.
We’re working toward a real outdoor place where kids can explore nature, grow food, meet animals, move their bodies, and find calm — all in the same place.
